What is Maxilofacial surgery?

At our Marbella Dentist, we pride ourselves in having a very complete team of dental specialists to ensure our patients can get the care they need, including Maxilofacial surgery. This discipline is a dental as well as surgical speciality and very useful to have as part of a dental clinic, as it can treat diseases, injuries and defects in the jaws and face which can cause problems with the bite and the appearance of teeth and the face. Sometimes when people come to us for orthodontic treatment, the issue is more than simply straightening teeth we need a surgical option to fix the jaw structure before orthodontics can be used.

Maxilofacial surgery deals with the mouth, jaws, face, skull and associated structures. There are a few common reasons why we will need to use maxilofacial surgery as part of your dental care –

  • If you have an impacted tooth or a tooth which is difficult to remove
  • If you need a bone graft ahead of getting implants
  • Corrective jaw surgery to fix severe overbite or underbite ahead of fitting braces

Our Oral and Maxilofacial Surgeon is Johanna Gregorie, who qualified in medicine and surgery from Malaga University and specialised in the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville. She has a Masters in Surgery and Implantology and she is a Fellow of the European Board of Oral-Maxilofacial Surgery. She can provide implants, botox, Hyaluronic acid, ortognatic surgery, treat TMJ disfunction and sleep apnea.

Please come and see us if you need help with any of these conditions, we will assess you and work up a treatment plan including Maxilofacial surgery if necessary and inform you of any other areas of dental work that you need to ensure you have healthy teeth, a good bite and a great smile.

We look forward to seeing you soon at our Marbella dental clinic!
